Beach photoshoots - the good, the bad & the ugly…

Ah, the joys of a Cornwall beach outdoor photoshoot - the sand, the sea, the unpredictable weather, and let's not forget the occasional photobombing seagull or sunbather. It may seem like a dreamy, picturesque location to capture those perfect Instagram shots, but let's be real - it's not always as easy as it looks.

What to expect…

01. Weather

First off, let's talk about the weather. Yes, Cornwall is known for its stunning coastline and sunny beaches, but it's also known for being able to contain four seasons in one day. One minute the sun is shining warmly, the next it's pouring rain and everything’s been swept off in the wind. So if you're planning a photoshoot at the beach, it might be wise to pack a variety of outfits!

Of course, if the forecast is awful we will reschedule, but be prepared to embrace some of the natural elements if necessary!

02. Rising tides

Next up - high tides. They can really put a damper on your beach photoshoot plans. One minute you're striking a pose on the sand, and the next minute you're scrambling to move out of the way of the incoming waves. It's always a good idea to check the tide schedule before planning a beach shoot to avoid any unexpected tidal waves.

It can be surprising how rapidly the tide seems to come in and the difference between how much beach there is from low to high tide can be remarkable.

It may look beautiful and pristine at sunrise, but it can be a real mess to deal with at the end of the day. And it gets everywhere!

Not usually a huge issue, but it has been for some little ones who don’t like the sensation of wet or cold sand, especially if it’s not particularly warm. Have closed shoes or wellies handy just in case, or you’ll have a limpet attached to you the whole session.

04. The wind

This one is my least favourite. Even on a sunny Sumer’s day, a cold sea breeze can feel pretty chilly. Bring layers to keep warm in case it whips up, and be prepared for some crazy hair photos.

We’ll do some extra jumping around, don’t worry, and most locations have somewhere to shelter if it’s getting a bit much.

05. Photobombers

Remember, we’re going to be in a public space. As much as we might want to have the beach to ourselves, it’s unlikely unless we’re doing a sunrise session (another reason for a 4am alarm - it’s so worth it!).

From photobombing dogs to curious onlookers, you never know who might appear in the background of the perfect shot. Don’t worry, I am used to photoshopping out distractions like that, but it can hamper a session if there’s still a large crowd from the day.

Note - it’s not unusual in Cornwall for an off-lead dog to run up and have a friendly sniff around - leading to many freak outs for little ones! My kids were always terrified and I’ve had sessions nearly abandoned because kids are so hyper vigilant and scared - just something to think about in case you have any issues with dogs.

06. GEtting wet

It might not be the plan, but at the beach everyone ends up getting wet to some degree which can add a lot of fun and interest to photos. In Summer I would love to do more family swim photoshoots even if just at the end, and paddling in the surf or puddles is often a given.

I’d highly recommend putting swimsuits on for the final shots of the day and seeing how far in you can get!

While it can be challenging and unpredictable, it can also be a lot of fun and lead to some truly beautiful and memorable photos. So, be prepared for anything, and embrace the beauty of the Cornish coast - messy sand, high tides, and all.
