Behind the scenes of a baby and toddler photoshoot

Sessions involving babies and toddlers - behind the scenes in Cornwall

During any session I love taking photos between takes, when everyone’s having a break or stopping for a feed. These to me are the storytelling pictures, behind the scenes but actually the real scene. I know you don’t always book a photography session to have these types of moments captured, but if you come to me you’ll most likely get some along side the ‘proper’ photos we take.

As we all know, toddlers bring another level of unpredictability to any session, let alone a newborn or baby shoot!

If you’re wondering what it’s like, and whether yours would be too unruly, I would say it’s pretty chaotic sometimes but nothing I can’t handle. Here are a couple of recent newborn and baby sessions including toddlers that show a glimpse behind the scenes for you.

Ted & Olivia

This was a newborn session with 1 week old Olivia, her parents and brother Ted who had just turned 2. Between photos is when we have the most fun, chatting, playing, keeping the energy light and fun. There’s nothing worse than when a toddler gets grumpy and then out comes a screen, and there’s no chance they’ll want to be in any more pictures.

We kept Ted going with toys & props from my collection (favourite being the wooden camera and rocket), as well as bubbles and dare I say, Smarties!

And for being such a good boy I let him press the button on my camera several times at the end, resulting in some fabulous photos of mum & dad, hehe.

Otis & Hattie

Otis was also about 2, and I knew from their maternity session that he was going to be reluctant to be in photos, so I made sure I had a stash of chocolate buttons ready for him.

I hid them around his baby sister and asked him to find them, with as much direction as I could as to where he had to stand to get them. It was a challenge but did the trick for those prized sibling shots.

The real trick is keeping it fun, and embracing their presence in any photos, even if it’s not quite what you had in mind.

Book a session with me if you want the experience to feel relaxed and natural, and don’t mind getting a variety of photos that include a glimpse of how life is at this time.
