Tips on what to expect during a beach maternity photo shoot

In Cornwall, beach maternity photography sessions are really popular. For most of the couples I meet, the beautiful Cornish coastline is really special to them, and it makes a gorgeous natural backdrop for photos, as well as capturing that distinct Kernow lifestyle.

I love photographing any session on the beach, but a maternity photoshoot is always something special. Especially with first time parents - they can spare an evening usually, and don’t have to be home for kiddie bedtimes, so we can really chill and get that stunning Cornwall light.

So, if you’re thinking of a maternity session on the beach with me, here are a few things I’d keep in mind.

  1. Wear layers - even in Summer it can turn nippy in the evenings. I normally bring a knitted shawl and blanket to wear in the photos, but you might want to pack an anorak for when we’re walking between spots.

  2. Waterproof shoes - this one is for the dads! I can’t tell you how many men have left a maternity session with soaking trainers or brogues! We do end up on the waters edge and there’s always a rogue wave… Ladies, you’ll probably be barefoot, but be ready to get wet.

  3. Dress the part - I am passionate about styling sessions to look beautiful with the surroundings. I have a selection of maxi dresses and highly recommend these for any outdoor/beach sessions. Husbands and partners should wear neutral, plain shirts with jeans/chinos or shorts.

  4. Get naked - you don’t have to, but if you’ve got that wild side this is a great time to let it out! Wear a bikini underneath, dare to go bare! Nothing is more gorgeous than your bump.

  5. Embrace the wind - we all know it can be a bit breezy down on the beach in the evenings. Ideally your session will happen within 2 hours of sunset, where we can work with that amazing golden and blue light. Wind gives lovely motion to your hair and floaty accessories and dresses.

  6. Bring the pooch! I love including dogs in sessions and I know you have a special bond with your fur baby. No reason they shouldn’t be involved in these photos.

  7. Feeling ridiculous - the best way to stop feeling awkward and self conscious is to relax into the moment - I will give you prompts and my aim is always natural moments, beautifully lit and working with the natural landscape and elements. Everyone starts off shy but don’t worry, it’ll pass and you’ll be posing like a pro by the end :)

Beach maternity sessions are really beautiful and if you have any questions or concerns before your session, just get in touch any time.
