Winter beach session in Cornwall | family shoot

Mini family beach session at Porthluney Cove Beach

This session was gifted to hubby Chris from Ali for Christmas, and they booked in for it one chilly but bright morning.

I do love winter outdoors, mainly for the light and colours, and cold weather clothing can really make it for beautiful styling - think chunky knits, textures like ruffles and fur - it’s so different to the floaty minimalism of summertime.

With the golden hour light lasting a lot longer than it does in Summer, it’s easier to fit sessions in at more convenient times - we shot this at 9am, and the light is perfect. Not too early for anyone - these guys stayed on for the morning and got to spend a lovely day off together once the session was over.

Making the most of our time

This was a mini session, so the family had 30 minutes with me. Little one wasn’t very happy to start - getting over a cold, and having to have her nose wiped put us on the wrong foot to begin with. But once she was set down to splash in the puddles on the beach she was happy.

Of course, she didn’t want to do anything else so we had to pry her away to the waters edge, where dad could do some swinging around to keep her distracted from the lure of those puddles - if you have a determined toddler you’ll know what I’m talking about.

The puddles proved to be too irresistible so we headed back up the beach with a little splash along the way. Porthluney is a big beach when the tide is low, but not too big and we headed to a shady area by the rocks, where a few family photos were possible (with a few crafty escape attempts made to get back to the puddles, ha ha!).

Time was soon up but we had a nice collection that captured the morning, and hopefully some memories of life with a one year old!
