Family moments on a Cornish beach
Making memories
“Family is not an important thing. It's everything.” – Michael J. Fox.
Making time away from the usual day-to-day distractions, endless jobs and to-do list to be together is all it takes - memories will be made. No plan, no fuss - just being together and seeing what happens.
It was a gorgeous Friday morning spent with these guys in October. The weather was beautiful, and the beach was quiet too - the perfect early Autumn combination which makes being out with the camera such a pleasure.
Most parents who have sessions will confess to usually feeling very awkward in front of a camera. It’s totally normal and fine! I was warned by mum Emma before the session that she and hubbie Chris would be super awkward, but they were so great, and it was just lovely hanging out and seeing where their 3 year old son took us (mainly up the rocks!).
The simple act of clearing the schedule for an hour, and spending that time together is all a family photoshoot needs to be. No plans, no fuss, no pretence - we just show up, and allow it to unfold.
I think it’s so important to remind parents that feeling awkward in front of the camera does not mean that you shouldn’t take the plunge and exist in photos with your kids. The experience can be quite fun, and hopefully when you see the photos in years to come the awkward feeling will be the furthest thing from your mind!
And believe it or not, the feeling soon passes and it’s really all about being in the moment with each other. Let me worry about how you look - it’s up to me to be looking for the light & angles that capture the beauty that you ARE!!
Make sure you don’t put it off too long - they’re not little for long.
And if you’re good, at the end you can have an ice cream :)
