What to expect when you become a parent | Cornwall mum & photographer

Parenthood - it’s full of surprises!

Parenthood is a life-changing experience that comes with many joys and challenges.

Here are some things you might not expect in parenthood:

  1. Lack of sleep

You may have heard that parents lose sleep, but you might not realize just how much sleep you'll miss. Sleep deprivation can be difficult to manage, especially when you're trying to balance caring for a newborn with other responsibilities.

Strangely, you get used to the feeling of being tired, not the tiredness itself.

2. Unexpected expenses

Babies require a lot of gear and supplies, and it can be surprising how quickly those expenses can add up. From diapers and formula to baby clothes and gear, there are many unexpected expenses that come with parenthood.

3. Emotional ups and downs

Parenthood can be an emotional rollercoaster, with highs and lows that you might not anticipate. You might feel overwhelming love and joy one moment and frustration or exhaustion the next.

4. Changes to your relationship

Parenthood can bring many changes to your relationship with your partner, and it's important to be prepared for those changes. You might find that your relationship with your partner evolves as you both adjust to being parents.

5. Lack of alone time

With a new baby in the house, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. You might find that you miss the freedom and flexibility of your pre-baby life.

6. Constant learning

Parenthood is a constant learning experience, and you might not realize just how much you'll need to learn about caring for a child. From feeding and diapering to developmental milestones and discipline, there is always something new to learn.

7. Feeling overwhelmed

Parenting can be overwhelming, and it's important to recognize that it's okay to ask for help. Don't be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or professionals if you need support.

Be mindful of the moments

Parenthood might not be a walk in the park but it is totally worth it.

Remember to savour as much of it as you can and give your children memories they can really value as they grow up. It doesn’t have to be overfilled with activity, and it’s ok to raise your kids knowing the joy of simple things.

Capturing these memories

When you book a family shoot you never know how it’s going to go.

A baby and a 3 year old (plus the family dog!) is always going to be a challenge. The photos in this post are from a family session at Treyarnon Bay near Newquay, Cornwall recently.

Ruby wanted no part of the photoshoot after an enthusiastic start, and baby Zara was equally not having a great day. Cue various tactics to get some family moments worth photographing. Part of me has to smile and appreciate with deepest compassion what we parents go through.

We always get there in the end and I am always happy to capture a bit of the craziness that is life raising little humans.

To book or enquire about a family session with me that captures your precious parenthood moments, get in touch - I’d love to help!
